The Full List: Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Songs of All-Time (2021 Updated)

Since you’re here, you’re very-likely aware that Rolling Stone magazine recently released an updated version of their popular, controversial and infamous “Top 500 Songs of All-Time” list that first irritated the internet waaaaay back in 2004.

Referring to it as the “definitive list of the 500 greatest songs of all time,” that first list caused a lot of buzz and heated discussions in and out of the music industry. Oh, all the arguments that must have been happening on MySpace in 2004.

Now approaching two decades after the first list, the music mag re-released an updated list of “historic favorites, world-changing anthems, and new classics” with the help of over 200 artists, writers, and industry figures.

The 2021 list has much more flavor

It’s been 17 years since that original list. MySpace is no longer around to post your opinions on whether Nirvana’s ‘Come As You Are’ is better than the 452nd best song ever, you’ll have to do that on Instagram now.

And not only are we now discussing music on different social media platforms, the version 2.0 looks completely different too; with the panel of critics swapping out more than 50% of the songs that appeared on that original 2004 list. A gut renovation of that initial list.

This year’s list is much more diverse with a large chunk of the newer entries coming from the hip-hop, R&B, and Latin pop genres.

Okay enough talking. You came here to see the full list, so here’s Rolling Stone’s 2021 full list of the 500 greatest songs ever, starting from #500 all the way to #1.

You can sort the above list by rank, song, artist or year if you want to slice and dice these greatest songs. We’ve also created a Spotify playlist of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All-Time where you can play each and every song in the order of Rolling Stone’s ranking.

All in all, the playlist will take you a less than a day and half to listen through – or if you don’t have any meetings this week, you can get through the 35 hours and 11 minutes during the workweek and still take off early on Friday.

Deeper understanding of hip-hop

Though it wasn’t a surprise to see newer songs make the list, it’s interesting to see some newer songs that were released by 2004 jump up to the top 50 like “Juicy” by Notorious B.I.G which was released in 1994, wasn’t included in the 2004 list, but now ranks as the 32nd greatest song of all-time.

The reasoning? Music tastes change over time. Specifically genres that music critics aren’t used to listening to, much less consider for these types of list or awards, had an enormous impact on how the new Rolling Stone list was constructed.

With time comes acceptance of a music genre. With time comes more respect for that type of music. More times means a deeper understanding of what makes for a legendary song in a specific music genre and that’s why we’re seeing a much more varied offering in the this year’s list.

Whether one agrees with whether Beyonce’s “Formation” (#73) is better than Johnny Cash’s “I Walk The Line” (#76) is matter of preference, taste and exposure, but we’re all better for having a larger catalog of types of music to choose from.

American Origins: 5 little known facts about the United States

The good ol’ US of A. One of the world’s youngest nations and certainly its youngest superpower, America has a rich and muddled history nonetheless. From turkey birds to Viking visitors, we’ve gathered up five of the weirdest facts around, all based on the nation’s humble origins.

1. Land Ho! The First Tourists

You know how it goes. Way back when in the late 15th Century an adventurous fellow by the name of Chris Columbus sailed out – out towards the west, towards danger, towards unknowing. He hoped to chart a new route to the Orient. Instead, after ten weeks at sea, he found himself land ho on the beaches of America. Commonly touted as the continent’s ‘discoverer,’ he was, in fact, quite late to the party. Native societies had been roaming the land for generations and, as new evidence now shows, they had already been partial to visitors.

From the Vikings, believe it not; Danes had been sailing back and forth across the Atlantic for centuries. Long before Christopher C. was even born, they braved the open ocean on their infamous longboats and stepped their stompy feet on land that would one day become part of the United States.

2. Taxes? No Thanks

It was taxes that angered the colonies; it was taxes that lit the spark of revolution. Understandably, then, there was a certain hesitation when it came to placing heavy tolls on citizens by the time the founding fathers came to power. Still, there were bills to be paid and a fledgeling nation was in need of repairs. Cue lotteries. That’s right, lotteries. The head honchos themselves were in fact known to organise en-masse games of chance for purposes both personal and governmental. Modern gaming brand Lottoland notes that the game involved guessing the number of Bibles sold in New York. The history of organized lotteries is indeed wild and monumental, and it even has a place in the origins of America.

3. Imports and Horses

Horses! European colonists and immigrants to the Americas introduced plenty of things during the settling of this newfound land, from crops and gunpowder to the written word – and that extensive list just so happens to include the thoroughbred horse. Given the Native American stereotype, you might think these mighty steeds had been local mounts since time gone by but they were in fact only introduced quite recently. The USA wouldn’t have been the same its without horses – to ride into battle, to pull cargo, to call upon friends.

4. The Turkey Bird

A bald eagle soars – America’s national bird appears in all its regal glory. It wasn’t always so, however. During the establishment of the nation, several creatures found themselves in contention for the top spot upon the flag, up to and including the lowly turkey. Believe it or not, Ben Franklin himself argued in support of this latter mascot, claiming the eagle was ‘a bird of bad moral character,’ on account of its scavenging habits. The turkey, on the other hand, was apparently ‘a bird of courage.’

5. Denture Donations

Ever heard of George Washington’s wooden teeth? Well, turns out they weren’t so wooden, after all. Rather than carve up a pair of dentures, he purchased his canines and molars from the very slaves who served under him. Or rather, that he owned. History makes heroes look a whole lot less noble when placed under the microscope, huh?

That’s it for this list, but there’s plenty more out there to discover. Whether it’s America’s history, the lotteries or the life and death cycle of a turkey bird, there’s always more to learn.

The Complete List of Dreamforce Bands and Musicians (2003-2022)

Dreamforce started out as an “user and developer conference” focusing on SaaS (software as a service) to one of the largest technology events in the world.

The nearly week-long event has been around now for over a dozen years growing from 1,300 attendees in it’s first year to well over 100,000 (and attendance continues to grow!). And in that time, the conference has become more than cloud computing and sales: it’s expanded into customer service, marketing, analytics, social media and more.

Not just that, but the annual Salesforce event has steadily attracted bigger and bigger names to deliver their yearly keynote address as well as bringing in popular bands to perform for the attendees.

Here’s a list of all the bands and musicians that have performed at Dreamforce, year by year:

Year # Band Band 2 Band 3 Music Festival
2003 1 David Vaskevitch
2004 2 Pride and Joy
2005 3 Grooveline Band
2006 4 Train
2007 5 INXS
2008 6 The Foo Fighters
2009 7 The Black Crowes
2010 8 Stevie Wonder Will.I.Am
2011 9 Metallica M.C. Hammer Will.I.Am
2012 10 The Red Hot Chili Peppers Lady Antebellum yes
2013 11 Green Day Blondie* yes
2014 12 Bruno Mars Cake - yes
2015 13 Foo Fighters The Killers Gary Clark Jr. yes
2016 14 U2 - -
2017 15 Alicia Keys Lenny Kravitz -
2018 16 Metallica - -
2019 17 Fleetwood Mac - -
2020 18 [Virtual N/A] - -
2021 19 Foo Fighters - -
2022 20 The Red Hot Chili Peppers - -

* For some reason, 2013 was a much larger musical event than most other years. In addition to Green Day, the Dreamforce musical event was combined a benefit with UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital held at AT&T Park. Blondie also played that night as well as Huey Lewis & The News making a surprise appearance. Also in 2013, Tony Bennett with Jerry Seinfield performed at a private party hosted by Benioff.

The first year of Dreamforce was obviously a smaller affair. Because the event was on a much smaller scale, it mostly focused on the business side of things as opposed to the conference today.

For a corporate event, it’s shocking see successful bands such as Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Foo Fighters and Metallica put their reputations on the line for a a couple hundred thousand.

It may be because Salesforce has shown that it’s a company with a conscience (U2 recently partnered with Salesforce).

Not that these bands are playing for free, but they’re more likely to play a business event like this when the company is reputable.
