It’s Popcorn Time! (Shhhh… watch TV and movies for free)
October 12, 2014 - Tech
When I went home to Michigan, one my friends introduced me to Popcorn Time, a web and mobile app that streams both movies and popular TV shows.
At first I was a little skeptical, but when he hooked his phone up to his projector and instantly played X-Men: Days of Future Past, I was a believer.
Called “Netflix for Bit Torrent,” Popcorn Time uses bit torrent technology and your internet technology to download the video, it then streams the downloaded file.
The great thing is that the file is downloaded, it’s not stored locally where it’s taking up valuable space and memory on your phone or laptop. It’s stored in the cloud.
Popcorn Time + Chromecast
I finally had some time to sit down and test out Popcorn Time last night; using Popcorn Time’s new Android app, Chromecast, and my wireless connection, I selected X-Men: Days of Future Past.
The app immediately started downloading the file. if you’re on your phone, make sure you’re using wireless and not mobile data so you’re not charged by your carrier. After less than a couple minutes of prepping the film, my television started seamlessly streaming the latest X-Men movie in high-resolution (with subtitles if you want/need them).
I was also able to skip around the movie, or rewind a scene I wanted to watch again with very little delay. And though I was streaming from my phone, I was able to still able to use other apps and text message.
There was no buffering or shakiness whatsoever and Popcorn Time isn’t some guy that brought a videocam to the movie theater that you commonly see from bit torrent sites, these were the real films.
Considering the speed, quality, the nice looking app, and that Popcorn Time is all free, I couldn’t be happier. The internet is awesome.
