Two Years Ago Today… Jeremy Lin was picked up by the New York Knicks

> Just came across this tweet-fact from Jessica Camerato: Two years ago today, Jeremy Lin was claimed off the waiver wire by the New York Knicks. Crazy. Then in a little over a month from being picked up, Lin would come off the bench with 25 points and 7 assists to lead the Knicks over the New Jersey Nets in what would be the beginning of Linsanity.

Jeremy Lin claimed off waivers 2 years ago tweet

Despite it technically being his fourth NBA season, in actualiy Lin has less than two years or real NBA game experience.

This tweet reminds us just how much can happen in two years. It really highlights how much of a whirlwind Jeremy Lin’s life has been: waived by the Houston Rockets on Christmas day, picked up by the Knicks two days later, rode the bench and was on the verge of being waived again, sent down to D-League where he plays one game and registers a triple-double.

All the while the Knicks lose 9/10 games experimenting with Iman Shumpert at point. Lin is called up when Mike Bibby and Toney Douglas are ineffective and Baron Davis suffers a setback to his back injury. Those setbacks set up Linsanity on the court and off for the next two months, Lin has season-ending knee surgery, leaving the Knicks that summer and signing a $25 million contract with the Rockets, having a documentary made about his life, receiving multiple hand-written, perfume-soaked notes from me, multiple minor injuries, out-sized expectations, and silly criticisms… all this in two years.

I think I would take up religion, too…

NBA Players Tweet About Jeremy Lin #Flashback

Jeremy Lin screams in Madison Square Garden as a member of the Knicks

It’s February, so not only is this the month of Chinese New Year, but it will always be the month in which Linsanity sprouted, in reverse, from the basketball heavens last year. In honor of last February, just so you can relive Linsanity, we’ve gathered some more NBA player tweets from that time:

“He’s not a fluke. Just the confidence he plays with, the pace, the understanding of the game. You can tell when a guy isn’t really that skilled but is just having a good stretch. This guy is skilled.”Tyson Chandler after the Knicks’ win over the Washington Wizards.

“Jeremy Lin is killing right now, I’m always rooting for the underdogs.”Rudy Gay via Twitter

“Me too! Glad (Lin is) killin it!”Kevin Durant via Twitter in response to Rudy Gay

“OK. I GIVE IN!!!!!!! ITS LEGIT!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!!!”Reggie Miller via Twitter after Lin hit the game-winning three against the Toronto Raptors.

“We should have kept [Lin]. Did not know he was this good. Anyone who says they knew misleading U.”Daryl Morey, Houston Rockets GM on Twitter.

“It’s the quickness that’s low to the ground. I’m not saying he’s like [Bulls guard] Derrick Rose or anything, but when you watch D-Rose closely, he’s low to the ground and when you’re that low and that fast, you see [Lin’s success].”Bill Walker.

“I knew (Lin) could play basketball, and if you are a guard that can run the pick-and-roll in their coach’s offense, you have a very good chance to excel.”John Wall

“I think it’s a great story. It’s a testament to perseverance and hard work, and I think a good example for kids everywhere.”Kobe Bryant after Lin outscored him 38-31 in a Knicks win.

“Lin is the real deal. He’s the true point guard the Knicks haven’t had in years. He’s the guy the Knicks have needed all along.”Bernard King, New York Knicks Legend.

“My God, he’s a tremendous player.” —Jerry West, NBA Hall-of-Famer

Linsanity Timeline

Do you want to relive Linsanity again and again and AGAIN and AGAIN like I do? Here’s one page with each of those game videos where you can enjoy the best February of your boring life over and over and over again. I’ve cried a thousand times over.

KNICKS vs. NETS (2012/02/04) The game that started the insanity. Lin comes off the bench, as the fourth string PG, and leads the Knicks to the win with 25 points and 7 assists.

KNICKS VS. UTAH JAZZ (2012/02/06) Linsanity game #2. Lin goes for 28 points in a win over the Utah Jazz.

KNICKS VS. WASHINGTON WIZARDS (2012/02/08) Third game, second as a starter, and Lin & the Knicks turn this one into a laugher. Lin has first career double-double (23 points / 10 assists)

KNICKS VS. LA LAKERS (2012/02/10) Jeremy Lin goes for 38 points in a nationally televised game against Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles. Only a week into Linsanity, the New York Knicks win their fourth straight with Jeremy Lin at the helm.

#Linsanity

I rushed out of work early to catch the latest Knicks game at a downtown restaurant that actually had NBATV (more difficult than expected). The first three quarters weren’t pretty – the Knicks were playing like shit.

The fourth quarter was different; the Knicks stormed back from 12 down, eventually tying the score at 87 when Lin converted a very difficult three point play. That play caused Randy and I to look at one another and just smile, kind of saying “Wow, is this for real?”

Little did we know that was just the warm up. After the Raptors missed on the ensuing play, the score still tied at 87. Iman Shumpert would miss a 16-foor bank shot, one that Tyson Chandler would rebound and pass out to Lin with roughly 18 seconds remaining.

No timeout. Lin wound the clock down, took a few measured dribbles, and would hit the game-winning three. That shot propelled Randy and I out of our seats, laughing and looking at one another in disbelief.

Knicks would win 90-87. That game was Jeremy Lin’s 5th NBA start, and it was the Knicks’ 6th straight victory. Linsanity.
