I just spent three nights at the Good Hotel. This review is going to write itself.
I spent the last three nights at the Good Hotel and even tonight, I struggle to remember what the room looked like. Clearly, it didn’t make an impression one way or the other. I don’t recall having any negative sentiments about the room’s space, the bed’s comfort, the bathroom amenities, but nor did I have any positive comments about the room.
There’s free wireless in your room, but it’s spotty. The front desk guy said it’s because there’s too many guests using it (shrugs shoulders).
The Good Hotel’s location on 7th and Mission is in a dead area across from the San Francisco Federal Building, next to Cafe Moda, and across the street from a Subway. It isn’t an ideal part of the city, but it’s a couple blocks away from Union Square; you’re definitely not leaving the hotel for the immediate surroundings, but you’re not too far from the action downtown.
The registration staff seems well-meaning and eager-to-help, but the two I encountered were visibly stressed as they bounded between the front desk’s two computers trying to serve the forming line of customers. During checkout, I needed to chat about a couple items on my bill. The staffer took my name and told me he would call me later to reconcile the bill. He didn’t, but it’s not a big deal. I’ll call back tomorrow (shrugs shoulders). [Four days later] I didn’t call back the next day and the Good Hotel didn’t call me back anymore.
It could be because it was a busy weekend in San Francisco; in addition to the normal flood of tourists, the weekend I stayed at Good was also the massive Outside Lands music festival. When I did get service, they were friendly enough.
It was nice that they had on-site parking, but the lot is pretty tight. If you have a medium to large car and the hotel is full, you’ll have a hard time maneuvering the space. All in all, it’s $30/day for self-parking with in and out privileges. You can park free if you have a hybrid car. Pretty standard parking price for San Francisco as a whole, but considering it’s not valet and the hotel’s nowhere location, it’s a few dollars more than it should be.
Good Hotel tries to force a personality with the photo strip wall paper, free parking for hybrids, a weird “green” water conservation sink perched on the toilet, and free bikes to rent (with a $150 deposit) onsite, but the eco-friendly mission is lost in the execution of the hotel.
I really didn’t think about the “Good” philosophy once while I was there and not until I started writing this review did the “bed frames made of 100% reclaimed wood,” the “Be Good” emblazoned on my room’s walls, and ZipCar vehicles in the lot did I then realize that they’re trying to be the “greenest vacation destination” (shrugs shoulders).
The Good Hotel is aptly named. It didn’t make me feel any kind of way; the hotel equivalent of the Indian head nod. It was there to allow me to rest my head. I had a few small complaints that are forgivable in exchange for a clean room and good service — which were provided, but the space and the amenities at the Good Hotel don’t stand out.
If I found the Good Hotel for a lower price than other similarly rated-hotels, then I would be inclined to stay there again. However, I would probably spend another $40/night to stay at The Mosser or an extra $60 at the Donatello — both of which are great hotels.
