Black culture is popular, black people are not

Today I scrolled across the following tweet and thought that it makes a powerful statement on race in a succinct, clear manner; a reality check in eight words: “Black culture is popular, black people are not,” was the perfect response to this tweet “everyone wants to be black until it’s time to be black.”

black culture is popular

As you can see the tweet really struck a nerve. Just eight words, less than half the 140 character count limit allowed on the platform and it’s been retweeted over 18,000 times (not counting all the quoted/modified tweets) and favorited more than 15,000 times in less than 24 hours.

I wonder how many of those that mimic black culture in their everyday words and actions, white gay community or otherwise, even care, are following, or aware of the tragedy in #Ferguson, Missouri?  .
