The San Diego Hoops gay basketball league kicked off its 2003-2004 season this past Wednesday with a full night of games at the Golden Hills Recreation Center. Once again, the league has eight teams, with three new sponsors joining the league this year.
The season started off with a battle of the new team sponsors when the Hummingbird Bakery/Brians’ American Eatery team faced Pecs. In the first half, Amy McClure and Dwight Dunn led the campaign for Hummingbird, giving them a 14-point lead going into the second half.
In the second half, Pecs made a run behind Chris Battistuz and Allison Luckey, but Hummingbird’s defense was able to hold them off for a 69-45 win. Dwight Dunn was the top scorer for Hummingbird/Brians’ with 20, while Brian Jackson contributed 18 points and Amy McClure 17. League rookie Allison Luckey and Chris Battistuz led the Pecs scoring, with 12 points each.
In game two it was Kickers up against last season’s defending champs, Moby Dick’s. Kickers took the early lead behind the play of Robert Wiggins and Jonathan Knapp. At the half, Kickers had a 10-point lead over Moby’s. Kickers maintained their lead through much of the second half until Moby Dick’s got on a run, with Eric McDaniels taking the lead. Despite McDaniels’ 27-point performance, Moby Dick’s was not able to overtake Kickers, who went on to win the game, 56-45. Robert Wiggins was the top scorer for Kickers, and also led the league in scoring for the night, with a total of 29 points.
In the third game of the night Powerhouse came out running fast and furious, but Fusion was able to quickly contain them and turn the tide in their own favor. The team of Jeff Wyngaert and Stuart Leung for Fusion proved to be too much for Powerhouse to fend off. Despite a great defensive effort on the part of Powerhouse, Fusion went on to win the game, 46-33. Jeff Wyngaert was the top scorer for Fusion, with 18 points, followed by Stuart Leung, with 11. Powerhouse’s leading scorer was Josh Logan, with nine points.
In the final game of the night it was Morgan Stanley against The Loft. After a slow start to the game, Morgan Stanley coach Paul Demke got his team fired up with a steal that started a scoring drive to give them a 13-point lead going into the half. Morgan Stanley kept up the pace in the second half and The Loft was never able to make up for the deficit. Demke lead the scoring for Morgan Stanley, with 21 points, followed by their big center, Dan Newbold, with nine points. Dan Taylor was the top scorer for The Loft, with 13 points.
