Back in 2007, sweetgreen opened their first store location in Washington D.C.

It’s hard to believe but sweetgreen was founded nearly 10 years ago; back in August 2007.
The fast-salad franchise was founded by three Georgetown University graduates: Nicolas Jammet, Nathaniel Ru, and Jonathan Neman, just 3 months after they graduated. The three crowdsourced money from friends and family to start the first sweetgreen location on M Street NW in Washington, D.C.
And that first location is still standing! It’s a funny looking, hobbit house on the same Georgetown campus the three graduated from, so if you’re in the area, you can visit that original Sweetgreen location.
Sweetgreen’s Significant Growth
Since Sweetgreen’s opening in 2007, it has expanded significantly, and become a favorite spot among for after-the-gym or during lunch (though lines can be exceptionally long between noon and 1:30 PM). As of 2016, that one location is now over 60 locations across the states. With plans of building out more multiple locations in 2017 in cities such as Los Angeles and Chicago.
If you’ve ever walked by a Sweetgreen during lunch hour, it gets packed–and for good reason. Their salads and bowls are hearty, healthy and fresh – but still healthy (calories wise). Always built with locally sourced ingredients, their salads are not only tasty and flavorful, but unique and with texture.
Don’t be overly-concerned when you see the line winding out the door; in most locations, the employees do a great job of managing lines, keeping the line moving by working seamlessly in a conveyor belt fashion. This isn’t always the case however. If you know your sweetgreen to not work this efficiently, there’s another option to order online. Or have it delivered.
If you’re hankering for a hearty salad for lunch but don’t want to spend most of your lunch waiting in line, Sweetgreen offers a convenient order-over-the-phone option. Skip the line by ordering through Sweetgreen’s App! It’s simple. Through the app, you can select your desired pick-up location, build your salad, and place your order. Pay through the app and simply pick up your salad from the Pick-up wall located behind the register at your designated Sweetgreen location.
