Even though I found The Bold Italic of the last couple years annoying, I never wanted them to shut down as the online magazine announced today in a short post:

Since our launch, The Bold Italic has strived to faithfully serve San Franciscans near and far, whether born and bred here or having just arrived in the city. We have a great passion for the Bay Area and all that it has to offer — and have had a lot of fun sharing our enthusiasm with you. Together we have built a strong community of followers, contributors, and partners. However, we have made the difficult decision to cease operations. It’s been a great run and we supremely thank everyone who has supported us along the way.

The Bold Italic started as a local online and print magazine six years ago that built a following for their specialized hip long form coverage. The Bold Italic usually posted a couple posts a week, but sometime in 2012, they ramped up their production and started posting several posts a day. From what I could tell, The Bold Italic was flourishing. It seemed as if their profile had grown exponentially in just two years.

But clearly that wasn’t making enough money to keep the online publication alive.

Whatever the strategy that parent company Gannett had in mind for The Bold Italic, they ended that experiment today. No more artsy images and oddball stories. At least not from The Bold Italic. No matter my opinion on the recent The Bold Italic, it’s no doubt a loss for the San Francisco, which saw the San Francisco Bay Guardian close shop last fall.
